Stage 2 of TICK - Structured Synthetic Phonics Programme - Ideal starting place for remedial students

Stage 2

Stage 2 is perfect for remedial students beginning their TICK journey or those who have completed Stage 1. It is suitable for children who already know most, if not all, of their alphabet sounds. Our free Initial Assessment, included in the Essentials bundle, will identify any skill or knowledge gaps and recommend the right starting point. TICK's comprehensive instructions will guide you in addressing these gaps and provide all the necessary information for teaching this stage.

Stage 2 comprises 47 lessons. It starts with a review of alphabet sounds and progresses from two phonemes to three, four, and new knowledge and graphemes. As you move through this stage, you'll cover beginning and end blends, rules for words ending in /c/, double consonants, both common 'oo' sounds, compound words, schwa (as in 'carrot' and 'doctor'), suffixes -s, -es, -er, and -ed, the Rabbit rule, 'c' vs. 'k' usage, and closed, r-controlled, and vowel team syllables.

The student will also learn a variety of new graphemes, as detailed in the sequence below:

During Stage 2, students will master the reading and spelling of the heart words 'he', 'we', 'be', 'me', 'no', 'go', 'so', 'have', 'come', 'some', 'she', 'they', 'are', and 'want'.

Every lesson, from reading materials to writing exercises, is readily available in the Essential bundle. We also offer a variety of additional games to enhance knowledge and fluency.
