TICK - Structured Synthetic Phonics Programme for New Zealand Students

Stage 1

Stage 1 marks the beginning of the TICK literacy journey, making it the perfect starting point for absolute beginners or remedial students with limited alphabet sound knowledge. If a student is already familiar with most alphabet phonemes and graphemes, they can begin at Stage 2.

In this stage, the focus is primarily on alphabet phonemes, emphasising the connection between correct letter formation (grapheme) and phoneme (sound). It also aids in developing essential blending and segmenting skills.

As students progress, they will gain fluency with CVC words before moving on to learn about the suffix -s and master reading and spelling of CVCC and CCVC words. Heart words such as 'I', 'my', 'a', 'of', 'to', 'do', 'was', 'the', and 'said' will also be conquered during this stage.

The introduction of alphabet graphemes is based on their letter formation, rather than word building, a unique feature of the TICK programme. We keep the introduction and application separate, a crucial aspect explained further in our detailed instructions.

For Stage 1, our scope and sequence, from left to right, is as follows:
