What is Synthetic Phonics?
Synthetic phonics is a systematic and explicit approach to teaching reading and spelling. Children are taught the sounds (phonemes) of the language and their corresponding graphemes (letters) - from the simple code of the alphabet through to more complex code knowledge. In synthetic phonics instruction, students learn to decode (read) and encode (spell) words at the same time by using the phonemic skills of blending and segmenting.
What is Structured Literacy?
While synthetic phonics is a specific component of structured literacy, this term was coined by the International Dyslexic Association to describe programmes that adhered to their knowledge and practice standards and are designed to support dyslexic children and others with reading difficulties. This approach is more comprehensive and goes beyond phonics instruction and includes other important components of language including orthography, syntax, and semantics.
