This game is thoughtfully designed to explore and reinforce the various ways the /ear/ phoneme can be represented.
Due to the Kiwi accent's near/square merger, distinguishing between the two different sounds - /air/ and /eer/ - is, more often than not, impossible. However, if you can hear a difference (and so can the child(ren), this game can be divided into two separate games.
Bare Bear contains words that will require the child to blend between two and four sounds, many of which are high-frequency words. Additionally, it is ideal for two to four players and will also revise the graphemes ‘ch’, ‘th’, ‘wh’, and ‘sh’. To play this game, the children need to be proficient in their alphabet sounds, demonstrate the ability to read words containing closed syllables, and have knowledge of compound words.
