‘Possum’ offers an opportunity for children to explore the nuances of the schwa sound. To effectively decode the words featured in this game, players should possess an understanding of closed syllables.

We recommend that children utilise a whiteboard marker to visually identify and segment unfamiliar words into their syllables. The game cards can be easily wiped clean at the conclusion of the game.

It is worth noting that the schwas in this game occur within the middle of words, consistently in the unstressed final syllable, as opposed to the schwa sound found at the beginnings or endings of words.

‘Possum’ is best suited for small groups of two to four players.
