‘The Armadillo’ is one step up from the game ‘Super Otter’, and like ‘Super Otter’, the focus is on open and closed syllables. The difference between the two games is that ‘The Armadillo’ offers children the opportunity to read words containing three or more syllables.

Although the words may look complex, children can use their solid foundation in alphabet sounds, the graphemes ‘oo’, ‘ee’, ‘sh’, ‘el’, ’ph’, ‘ar’, ‘or’, ‘er’, ‘our’, and the schwa found in the middle of words.

To play this game, you will need between two and four players. We also recommend that you have a whiteboard marker handy to encourage children to break the words on the game cards into decodable syllables.
