Stage 1 – Phase 2 Essential Bundle

Children typically progress to Phase 2 after completing at least the first 12 lessons of Phase 1. By this stage, they should have developed fluency with the first 12 graphemes and their corresponding phonemes, while beginning to build their oral phonemic awareness skills.

Phase 2 builds on this foundation by connecting phonemic awareness to print and developing early reading and spelling fluency. Children learn to blend, segment, read, and spell VC and CVC words before progressing to words containing the suffix -s, VCC, CVCC, and CCVC word structures.

Throughout this phase, children continue to strengthen their phonemic awareness while developing automaticity in reading and spelling.

What's included in this Essential Bundle:

Teaching Instructions
A comprehensive guide containing all information required to teach and implement Phase 2 successfully.

Student Cards
This resource contains one reading card for each of the 44 lessons within Phase 2, with a range of alternative options included. Each card contains carefully selected words, noun phrases, fragments, sentences, and the current focus heart words. The cards are designed to develop reading fluency.

Teaching Cards (44 Total)
Each teaching card provides detailed lesson guidance and includes:

  • Word lists for phonemic awareness activities
  • Words for spelling practice
  • Optional word chain
  • Dictation passages of varying lengths

Elkonin Boxes
An Elkonin Boxes resource is included to continue supporting blending and segmenting development. This resource is particularly valuable while children are learning to write the symbols, and can be gradually phased out as children become more proficient at representing sounds in writing.

Reading and Spelling Worksheets
This resource contains 23 worksheets designed to provide additional practice with reading and spelling VC and CVC words.

Each worksheet:

  • Focuses on isolated VC and CVC words
  • Identifies the graphemes being practised
  • Includes at least one reading activity and one spelling activity
  • Provides a range of engaging tasks such as colouring, cutting, gluing, circling, ticking, crossing out, reading, and writing

The worksheets may be used in any order, allowing them to be aligned with your teaching sequence.

Checks 1–5
These short assessment tools are designed to be completed after each group of graphemes has been taught. They provide a quick and effective way to monitor children's knowledge and identify any areas requiring further consolidation before moving on to the next lesson sequence.

Pause 1 and Pause 2 Assessments
Two assessment points are included to monitor progress throughout the phase. Pause 1 is designed to assess reading and spelling fluency with common VC and CVC words. Pause 2 is completed at the end of the phase and assesses reading and spelling accuracy and fluency with VCC, CVCC, and CCVC words before children progress to Stage 2.
